An interesting combination of traditional technique and modern style, this matcha bowl from Kyoto uses a kairagi (shark or stingray skin) glaze to produce cracking in natural patterns. This creates a unique effect of dark black against the white (shiro) glaze. The sides are carved in mentori (chamfered) fashion to produce angular shapes on the exterior while keeping the interior circular for whisking matcha.
The metallic grey outer bottom is rough and irregular. The colour shifts to light grey and then white with light grey to a black border on the top. The variety of techniques and colours characterize this wonderful piece.
